Counsler Steve came over last night around 6. It was an all hands on deck meeting as we sat down to try and focus the young one on the task at hand, that is, deciding WHERE and HOW he was going to get into the college of choice.
It was such a strange thing to sit there with a kid that was only 6 years old when I first met him and then listen to the “things” that he’d have to accomplish before he approaches colleges next year.
“Things†such as community service, extra curricular activities, internships, SAT’s, ACT’s and all the while still maintaining a gigantor of a GPA.
It made me twitchy. (more…)

Yeah, he’ll probably hate the fact I’m focusing attention on him. But here is the essay, the personal statement, that he came up with in order to enter the Cambridge program this summer.
Now…he’s 14. I’m 30 and I still couldn’t write like this…anyways, here is me bragging.

But he A) doesn’t like his name El Penguino (clap clap) - though that is what he is going to be called forever and B) is going by a japanese name that you and I will have a hard time saying. So, I decided that, in the spirit of screwing with Shinzo Abe and his thinly veiled “anti-foreigner” crazy policy, I will help Japan-ify and otherwise internet geek-ify the loyal readers of this esteemed site. To “kick” (get it? Smile now, groan later) off the first wave of this thing, I proudly present the Japanese Music Video of the Week (or whatever time allows).
