I gotta tell you, I kind of O.D.’d on comic books in the last year. I was buying far more (kinda still am) comics than I should of, following storylines in hopes that it’d go somewhere spectacular.
To no avail.
DC is trashed right now. Batman RIP, final Crisis, ugh. It’s just mediocre without any cohesion even in indvidiual stories. Even the magnificent Green Lantern (and Corps) is just playing the “Blackest Night” (GL armageddon) for FAR too long.
Marvel has some good books, but the Secret Invasion is starting to be a let down. I loved the idea that this was three years in the making. I thought, OH man this is going to be a great chance to reboot the universe without actually rebooting the universe. People we thought dead, would be alive (because of course the characters that died would actually be skrulls), characters that did things unseemly, or out of character would now be shown to be skrulls, of course!
Alas. They didn’t make that leap. It’s just turned into a Alien Invasion story, with a few nice twists and turns, but really…I don’t think it did what it could have. It’s like watching a great movie, or at least great for the first 2/3rds and then it just falls apart into cliche’s and unsurprising action dragging the great feeling of the first part down to the mediocre level it finds itself at.
So…maybe I’m looking at this all to harshly. I wouldn’t put it past me.

I’m going to cut back a bit. Stop buying the crap that I keep hoping will get better and never does.

I did this a few years back, and read nothing but ‘Batman’ and an occasional X-Men off the shelf. I don’t regret it, because the stuff that I missed out on and actually wanted to read I picked up in trades, which is a way of reading comics that the wallet appreciates.
That said, you’re a stronger man than I. I’ve cut a few back recently, but I’m still reading and buying waaay too much ;/
