Beauty and the Geek - this years crap.

Beauty and the Geek is one of those “this can’t be good” shows that really IS good. I don’t mean good like “Oh this is entertaining (which it is)” I mean good in the moral sense of the word. If you haven’t checked it out, it’s basically a reality version of most 80’s John Hughes movies. It’s the Breakfast club without the pesky jocks or stoners. It’s 16 candles but Anthony Michael Hall being stuck in a room with Molly Ringwald for the duration, It’s Pretty in Pink as it’s supposed to be (with Ducky winning the girl)…

Basically the show is set up with something like 10 airhead beauties are thrown into a mansion with 10 geek/nerds of the most extreme persuasion. Generally the geeks cannot function properly in a social setting. Their knowledge of things like sports to hygiene is extremely lacking and can be so insanely off putting you wonder if their parents shouldn’t be sued for child abuse.

The Beauties have the opposite problem. Their lives have been sheltered to the point where they can do nothing for themselves, they are almost exclusively educated on tabloid shows/magazines, and if you are not pretty on the outside, well then, you really shouldn’t even be looked upon as human.

Very depressing.

This season they switched it up at the beginning and had the beauties versus the geeks in competitions, which didn’t go over that well, and after a couple of eliminations they put them back together as teams (smart move - though watching the beauties claw at each other held my attention for a bit), one beauty living with one geek.

Generally by the end of the series you get the sense that MOST of the participants recognize that humans are humans no matter what packaging they come in. The Geeks get a little more self worth and confidence while the beauties realize there is more depth to themselves as well as the people around them. See? Good moral message.

I just got finished watching yesterdays episode, and where most of the past seasons I just found myself loving the geeks and loathing the beauties, this time it’s reversed. The geeks are pretty much the lamest people on earth, devoid of character and perpetually whiney. Plus they are SO geeky it doesn’t matter what you do to them. Usually every season they have these “geek makeovers” that make their beauty partners gasp at the radical change. This year? Not so much. There is only so much you can do with these guys, and most of it is…not much. (though during the clip show they brought back this guy that was eliminated early on and gave him a free makeover. I KID YOU NOT, this guy looked like a different human being. He went from Jeremiah Johnson to Ryan Gosling with a few snips of the scissors.

Plus, most past seasons every episode ends with two couples having to fight it out in the elimination room to see who goes home. This year there seems to be an inordinate amount of just arbitrary choosing.

BAH!

Plus one of the best girls (Tara) is stuck with THE most annoying human in the world (COWBOY JOE), and it’s KILLING ME!!!!

Tara is some model who is actually seemingly a sweet gal. Cowboy Joe is this LOUD, negative, snoring jerkwad that stumbles about the house trying to act sincere while squinting his eyes every second. (Don’t believe me about the jerkwad? he spit at one of the girls at one point - yeah I couldn’t believe it either).

*SPOILER*

Last night they got rid of the Buff Geek (guy was built like Ahnuld) and his partner..eh, whatever. I’m not really invested in the crew this year. They all are just so passive and boring. Give me last years triumph, or the year before with superstar Geek NATE and his Star Wars Punk Band lost the game but only because he wanted his partner to learn something about who she and the rest of humanity is.

In fact I don’t know why I’m still watching this season of B&E…oh yeah, I’m addicted.

Crap.

Yeah, I’ve watched last season and thought it was great. Couldn’t get into it this season… now after reading your post, I’m glad I didn’t waste my time! Thanks for the update.

When I first saw your blog title I thought you were talking about me and my hubby.

I have watched a few of these episodes when there’s nothing else to watch. At first, I too thought it would be another stupid reality show, but it really IS pretty decent.

I have been so impressed with the other seasons but haven’t watched this season much. I’m glad you put up the link too. I’m glad he got the makeover after all.
