Last night Shedaily, M2 and I went out to watch THIS

Yeah I know, what is a white boy doing going to a somewhat ethnocentric sketch comedy show?

Well I blame M2. El is out of town and it’s rare that any of us get out of the house as it is. Plus I don’t really spend all that much time doing fun stuff with M2 and Shedaily by themselves, so this was a welcome treat.

After M2 and Shedaily took me out to dinner at the Beanery we headed over to this small theater in the alley’s behind Thirds Street Promenade, a small, fairly new theater (which there seems to be a lack of on the Westside) called the Westside Eclectic.

This peculiar intern of the theater came out and talk to us…sort of. It was like she was in and out. Part of the conversation she would respond to and then suddenly she’d kind of get this glazed look and stare around.

“Did I answer you?” she’d come back to us and say a far too many seconds later.

I don’t think she was on drugs or anything, i just think she was tired, but it was weird. hah

We got inside with our “Industry” credentials and we sat in the second row waiting to get our ho ho’s and ha ha’s on.

I thought for sure I was going to be offended by the act. It just had that feel. Either that or completely have no clue what was going on…. but suprisingly, though their politics were radically different than mine I had a good time.

The troupe was a blend of live action sketches, video commercials/sketches and musical numbers…yes…musical numbers.

“You are the Juan that I want” parody of the Grease song.

A parody of My Sharona about the lady in White legend complete with dancers and a ton more.

Speaking of dancers there was ALOT of dancing, and it was good. Well choreographed and just specatacularily hilarious.

Two stand out performers, Sandy Avila who’s vibrant performance and hysterical facial expressions had me giggling more than once. She was like Lucille Ball if she’d be raised in the barrio.

And the second was Nick Walker the only white guy on the Latino Comedy Project, which is weird, because this guy was the star of the show in my estimation. His wacky antics, George Bush impressions, transformative character powers and his very strange ability to dance like mad was so electric that I couldn’t stop watching this guy.

It felt like the first time I had seen Jim Carrey on In Living Color. His presence so dominated everything he did (in a good way) i pretty much stood in awe.

So, if you have 8 bucks and the time I’d really recommend checking it out. It’s a fun time out to watch a dynamic mesh of multimedia and sketch comedy.
