Superman Returns

Went to Superman the other day…

Mann’s Chinese Theater at about 10pm on Tuesday. First showing so of course all the freaks came out (which I wish I would have taken pictures. I have a little video but it came out bad - for shame).

It was like Moses had took a wrong turn and instead of getting to Egypt for the Exodus he got to the Comic Con instead. It was Geekville USA. Everyone seemed to be wearing a Superman shirt (with the exceptions of a couple of people, one who had a white picture of Marlon Brando’s Jor El on Black and another that had Zod with the words “KNEEL” below it…all cool) and talking excitedly about what’s about to happen. In fact I think that most of these people were the same ones at Batman Begins that we had seen here some months prior.

We were in the middle of the two thousand person line, but we were also with the supreme commander of sneaking into movies - Damian, who superbly once again was able to bypass the significant security and get in with the first wave, saving us the most premiere of seats.

Bryan Singer and the two writers were there being mobbed, low level actors and wannabes milled about.

The movie started to a cacophony of geek screaming that only worsened when the trailer for Spider Man 3 appeared (which looks cool).

A couple of comments and then Bam into the flick.

The movie is not a BAD movie. It’s well done and a great homage to the previous one and a half Donner flicks before it (so make sure you watch those before going, there are alot of in jokes). But I’m conflicted on if I liked it or not. Superman to me had always been the beacon of light in the Superman realm. He was never as conflicted as Batman or funny as the Flash, he was Superman! He stood for Truth Justice and the American Way. This Superman did so too, but it was with so much saddness.

The Bad: Plot I didn’t think was all that, and the movie left me with more questions than answers (hopefully setting up for answers in the next couple of movies). The CGI I thought was beyond obvious at some points and then others I was like “wow that looks cool”. Action sequences to me were lackluster, and I thought the movie was a bit long.

The Good: This movie had alot of guts to remove itself for the DC canon of Superman. There is alot that goes on here for emotions sake rather than coherent logics, and that is both good and bad. The score is as rousing as ever and Brandon Routh makes a realllly good Superman. Kevin Spacey does a great turn on Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor

In all it’ s not my favorite Superhero movie (I’m still reserving that for Batman Begins), but definately is in the top ten, and depending on what happens next it could go higher.

In other news I’ll be out of town for about a week and then back Wed which will hopefully bring me in line to hang out and bowl with my Uncle Rob hoorah!

I was wearing a Hulk Shirt and Amanda was wearing a sequined Superman shirt. lol we rule. Loved the movie. I honestly got like goosebumps and almost, ALMOST teary eyed for some reason when the plane scene happened. Like right at the end.. when he’s just being Superman. The safest way to travel line..then the crowd cheering. I swear to you I am gay for Superman.

I saw it Tuesday night with a bunch of loud mouth cell phone talkers at Century City. Thought it was quite good - I did not fidget at all which is more than I can say about X-Men 3. Had issues with Superman and Lois being way too young for the storyline and the length of the movie. Thoroughly enjoyed any time the Superman suit came out. Yummy. And, hey, choosing between Cyclops and Superman - that’s not a bad place in which to be. :) For me - Superman wins. Unless Wolverine is hangin’ around somewhere.

Yeah, Josh wants to know if you were wearing a superman t-shirt too. I skipped the whole middle section of your post, cause Josh was making me swear not to read anything that would spoil. But I did think the screaming geeks were funny!!

FINALLY SAW IT!!

Oh man, I’m with Skedoozy on this one, I loved it. Got teary eyed and all. To me, this was perfectly done. Just enough of the old and new with awesome music and great visual effects.

And I dug the conflicted emotion stuff. If he would have broken his super-good guy ethics, then it might have been changing him a bit too much, but he didn’t and it helped me adopt the new guy easier.

Anyways, loved it!
